Two years ago, on October 7, 2023, Israel endured one of the darkest days in its modern history.
Hamas terrorists launched a barbaric and unprovoked assault that claimed the lives of more than 1,200 innocent people, men, women, and children murdered in their homes, at a music festival, and in their communities.
Hundreds were taken hostage, and countless others were left traumatised by the brutality of that day.
We remember the victims, the survivors, and the families whose lives were shattered.
We reaffirm our unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism and to ensure that such atrocities can never be repeated.
There is no moral equivalence between a democratic nation defending its citizens and a terrorist organisation dedicated to their destruction.
Australia’s response must be clear and principled.
We must stand firmly with Israel in the face of terror and reject any policy that lends legitimacy or comfort to Hamas.
When extremists celebrate our government’s decisions, it is a sign that we have lost moral clarity.
Yet even as we support Israel’s right to defend itself, we continue to hope for peace, a peace that ensures security for Israelis and dignity for Palestinians.
True peace can only come when terrorism is defeated, hostages are freed, and leaders on all sides commit to coexistence and mutual respect.
On this solemn anniversary, we remember, we stand with Israel, and we renew our hope for a future of justice, security, and peace for all.
