You read it here first… Whatever you can say about Canberra’s shinybums, they have their ears to the ground. It’s why they’re so good at self-preservation.

And as part of that self-preservation, the SpecOz understands that they’re making contingencies for a new Labor leader — former adviser to Wayne Swan and Treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers.

Labor is in dire financial straits; even borrowing to pay staff, some sources say. Anthony Albanese’s personal position hasn’t been much better, but until this week leadership talk was been kept to a minimal mumble so as not to derail the campaign for the Eden-Monaro by-election on July 4.

It was also being said that, should Albo be rolled, his replacement would effectively be a kamikaze pilot. Their task would be to do as much damage as possible to the Morrison government at the next election, but it was thought unlikely that they’d sink it — or remain in their job afterwards. It would only be after a loss in 2022 when a genuine chance at the Lodge would come forward to lead the ALP.

Chalmers, Labor sources say, is circling. But if the shinybums are making contingencies that suggests he’s not just merely circling, but circling — preparing to strike.
