Malcolm Turnbull rolled the dice. He won — but only just. The ambush worked — but only just.

Paul Keating, of course, took two attempts to blast Bob Hawke out of the top job. But that was early in the electoral cycle. A poll can be held any Saturday.

Now, the question is — will Turnbull roll the dice again, this time on a general election, in the hope he might fall over the line like he has this morning?

He may rather die at the hands of the electorate, rather than be wounded, then finished off, by his colleagues.
