I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

There you go. I said it. ‘Christmas!’

Isn’t it strange how so many of our political and corporate leaders are afraid of the word?

I can just imagine their triggered little faces. It’s 2023, and Christianity is no longer relevant, they would say.

2,023 years since what, I ask?

A Woke council in Melbourne put up decorations last week that read: ‘Get Merry.’ Which, of course, begged the question, ‘Get Merry … about what?’

It’s not Merry Allah.

It’s not Merry Krishna.

It’s not Merry Buddha.

It’s not Merry Atheism.

It’s certainly not Merry Albo!

It’s Merry Christmas because it’s the time every year the entire world celebrates Christ. The world rejoices in God becoming one of us to live the life we should have lived and, ultimately, taking on Himself the punishment for our sins.

Now, of course, you don’t have to believe that it’s true. That’s the beauty of living in a free country like Australia. There’s no imposed religion.

But even if you don’t believe the Christmas message to be true, it’s the kind of thing that I think we should all wish was true.

I think we’d agree that if there was a God, and if He was good, and if He was relatable, and if He was merciful, that would certainly constitute Joy to the World.

So no matter who you are, where you’ve been, or what you have or haven’t done this year, my wish for you is that you find goodness and kindness and hope this Christmas.

Oh, and just to make sure that our energy Minister Chris Bowen found goodness and hope, I gave him a lovingly wrapped box of coal for Christmas.

A lot of our politicians don’t believe in coal – just like they don’t believe in Jesus – but the fact they don’t believe doesn’t make it untrue!

I hope you all get to spend some quality time with family and friends in the coming weeks. Enjoy the simple things in life, and reflect on the hope that Christmas brings to our troubled world.

Merry Christmas everyone, and a free and happy New Year.
