GB News civil war intensifies

It’s safe to say that this hasn’t been GB News’s finest week and there’s no sign of the drama stopping any time soon. First Laurence Fox and Dan Wootton were suspended from the channel for their, er, discussion about political commentator Ava Evans. Now Calvin Robinson has become the third presenter to be disciplined after posting a lengthy defence of Wootton online.

Robinson’s defiant post appears to have set off alarm bells at GB News HQ. The Deacon’s fury at his colleague’s suspension was channelled into a 326-word long Twitter rant about the ‘pandering’ of his bosses to the ‘woke mob’. Wootton, he raged ‘brought so many people on board… including the careerist ambitious ones who are currently gunning for his job. These people are worse than the woke mob, because these vultures are giving the mob ammunition and essentially escalating the channel’s demise.’ Gosh. Mr S can only imagine that the channel’s HR team had their work cut out…

The self-proclaimed ‘Common Sense Crusade’ presenter continued:

Our bosses are scared. Afraid of Ofcom, afraid of the woke mob, and afraid they’re going to run out of money unless they manage to sort this advertising problem out. We need to give them courage, not enable them to capitulate. If they pander to the woke mob, we are finished. Someone else might get the prime time slot for a bit, but it will not be a promotion if you jump in Dan’s grave. You’ll just be making space alongside his corpse for your own.

Such hyperbole failed to impress Robinson’s much-maligned bosses. Three hours later, he took to social media again to deliver this pithy post:‘I have been suspended from GB News.’ Fool around and find out Calvin…

Steerpike hears that something of a power struggle is currently underway at GB News between some of the more outspoken presenters and those who, frankly, want it to be a little less maverick. Looks like the self-regarding ‘sensibles’ are in the ascent, following this week’s hat-trick of suspensions.
