On Friday protesters took the streets of our nation’s major cities by the tens of thousands, for what they called ‘Sack ScoMo’ rallies, intent on creating public pressure on the Prime Minister to resign.

Despite a series of major mistakes in the handling of the bushfire crisis, especially in the public relations realmScott Morrison being forced out of the Lodge remains a very unlikely outcome.

But for a moment’s let’s imagine a hypothetical scenario where through some twist of fate the protesters are given their wish and PM resigns. There would be no election, no minority government and the Liberal Party room would decide on Morrison’s successor — unlike some of the acid trip scenarios put forward by some demonstrators in which the PM’s fall somehow results in a Labor government or perhaps even a Labor/Greens coalition government.

In all likelihood, their efforts to boot Morrison out of the lodge would result in the ascension to power of the only person in the Liberal Party many of them dislike more than Morrison, Peter Dutton.

Despite the likelihood of this outcome in the event of Morrison exiting politics, there seems to be a belief amongst some on the left that the Home Affairs Minister couldn’t possibly defeat Anthony Albanese in an election. This apparently makes Dutton a far more desirable opponent for the supporters of the left than Morrison.

But one can’t help but hear the echoes of October 2016, during which practically everyone — including more than a few Australian political commentators — said that Trump was the best possible opponent for Hilary Clinton in the presidential election because he couldn’t possibly win.

While Morrison being forced out of the top job currently remains a very unlikely outcome, protesters best be careful what they wish for.

Because if by some twist of fate the PM did resign, his most likely replacement would be a nightmare scenario for the left, the ascension to power of their arch-nemesis Peter Dutton.
