Dear George Orwell, I’m seeking advice on Net Zero

Dear George, I enjoyed your light-hearted novel, it brought back memories of the good times we used to enjoy.

If you have a minute, could you please send The Science that explains why Australian CO2 emissions matter a damn? I keep being told it matters … that living cold, dark, and poor is necessary. I just need a glimmer of hope that this deprived future will actually ‘save the world’, and I shall willingly comply.

I will forego voluntary transport in all except the most egregious situations – I’ll petition the council to run at least one electric bus on my route, even if it occurs at a chilly 4 am. The kids can walk to school, it will be much safer without petrol cars – the battery ones never hit pedestrians or crash, or spontaneously combust…

I will forego meat, evolving to a lean protein-starved vegetarian diet. I just hope I don’t have to run to catch that silent bus as it passes the bus stop three minutes early. My soy-based stride withers away quicker than it used to. Maybe I’m getting old…

I will upgrade my gas cooktop to a new electric model, even if my simple spreadsheet shows the $2,000 cooktop, plus the $1,000 electrician fees to install the new circuit will then cost $200 per year in electricity. The gas cooktop only had thirty years longer to run, and pretty soon the electricity will be cheaper than the $97 per year it costs me in Swap-n-Go’s…

I will seek out an electricity provider with green credentials, upgrade my 10-year-old solar system, and add a $15,000 battery. Combined with my surge-charging time-of-use meter, I’ll be able to charge my battery so the power company can utilise its capacity. We are all in this together after all…

With the economic boom from being the Renewable Energy Superpower just around the corner, I feel comfortable saying goodbye to my well-paid job in the resources industry. Jobkeeper is now keeping up with inflation, and since I will no longer buy expensive meat, I can save up for bread, milk, and eggs each week. My application for a government job is being processed, I remain hopeful…

I received a letter from my local MP this week. The guy must work hard because he seems to be everywhere on social media, and his message is so bright and articulate. I’m so glad I voted for him, and he’s doing so well with the big family and the new house by the ocean. His routine must be tough, he’s always flying somewhere…

Since Australia joined the new Global Council, I don’t even have to swipe onto the bus anymore, the facial recognition automatically charges me the correct amount, even if I’ve overdrawn my carbon budget for the week. Come to think of it, I haven’t needed to log onto my banking for a while now…

It helped when the Under Treasurer for Australia (he’s under the Global Council Treasurer) explained that reparations were like HECS, so we could repay the indigenous over time and come out the end with a certificate really worth something…

When the Global Council cancelled evil distinctions like Third World and First World, it made sense to share everything equally with every country. Of course that required a lot of redistribution, but to achieve a fair outcome, some countries had to pay a bit more. It’s only just…

Anyway, if you could send me The Science, it would be much appreciated. It will give me something new to read. Things are quiet now the riots have settled down. I haven’t seen any on the television or on social media for months…
