Things have become so ridiculous in Western society that it’s difficult to come up with a scenario that could be considered as having gone too far. Just take the following satirical advertisement for the Democrat Campaign by Allie Beth Stuckey titled: ‘Why you should vote blue in the upcoming mid-term elections’.
Someone really needs to produce something like this for the political equivalent in Australia. What is become clear, is that as politics in the West becomes increasingly polarised, those on the Left are starting to eat themselves alive. And the problem is, they are so tone-deaf that they don’t even hear the delusion regarding their own inconsistency.
Take for instance the following video of involving Reverend Susan Rothenburg—a leftist Presbyterian minister—from Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania where the horrific attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue recently occurred. And before you personally email me, let me just say that there is no excuse for this kind of hysterical and clearly ‘un-Christian’ behaviour. That is why I refer to this as Episode #2354 of Trump Derangement Syndrome:
Did you notice the obvious irrationality of her outburst? Rothenburg said:
You don’t belong here… This is our neighbourhood! We welcome everybody here. You only care about YOU. You are not welcome on my street, these are my neighbours that were killed. You are not welcome in Squirrel Hill. Do you understand that?
So, I guess that means everybody is welcome ‘except’ the democratically elected President of the United States—representing the nation of the American people—who comes to pay his respects with his Jewish son-in-law. This may just be a new low in leftism’s self-righteous strategy of playing the victim. As Greg Sheridan has written:
The Democrat and centre-left rhetoric is infused with violence. Hillary Clinton, the perfect if always slightly delayed weather vane, forever blowing with the zeitgeist, explicitly urged her supporters not to be civil to Republicans until after next week’s midterm elections. Former Democratic attorney-general Eric Holder urged Democrats to “kick Republicans”.
But it gets even worse. The actor, Arthur Cromwell has warned that, “There will be blood of the streets” if the Democrats do not win the next election.” And what we’re already seeing is that this is not empty threat. Robert A. J. Gagnon, an Associate Professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary—who teaches where Susan Rothenburg trained—posted the following on Facebook:
More love from the left? Here’s what my friend Robert Oscar Lopez posted on his FB page: ‘My cousin Enrique Lopez is the other Republican in the family. Last week at a Duncan Hunter rally radical leftists slashed his tires, smashed others’ car mirrors, leaving a note: “Do what we say or die.” He reached out to me in shock.
Welcome to the new age of leftist intolerance. Where, as George Orwell has famously predicted: “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” Or, as philosopher and political theorist, John Milbank, has more recently incisively observed, ‘Liberals will embrace an authoritarianism to escape their own contradictions if it is respectably other and non-Western.’
Mark Powell is the Associate Pastor of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Strathfield.
