Reducing the 50 per cent capital gains tax discount is one of a welter of tax ideas to receive attention in the week since Treasurer Scott Morrison flagged tax increases as an alternative if the Senate fails to pass the government’s expenditure cuts.
It’s not a new idea, as halving the discount (and thereby increasing capital gains tax by a whopping 50 per cent) has been Labor policy since the 2016 election.
