Switzerland is not in the EEA and is not part of the single Market. A country you might have referred to correctly in this context would be Norway.

It is not chimerical to make a comparison of UK-rest of EU to Canada-USA. There is more trade between Canada-EU than between any other pair of countries in the world. And this is free trade. Geographically, most Canadians are as close to the US border as most Britons are to the French coast or Irish border.


There are closer defence links between the US and Canada (NORAD) than between any two European countries.

Culturally, the US and Canada close, an analogy might be the UK-Ireland bond.

But neither the US nor Canada would be willing to give up a fraction of the sovereignty which European countries have to surrender to be part of the Single Market.
