The general secretary of the Trades Union Congress appears to be a man of many talents – at least in his own estimation. Paul Nowak yesterday secured a plum role as a non-executive director at the Bank of England – god help us. And next Thursday he will venture into music, releasing a new single titled ‘Palestine’. If only the economy were expanding as quickly as Paul’s CV.
All proceeds from what will doubtless be an anthem for the ages will go to the ‘Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions’ to ‘support children impacted by the occupation of the West Bank’. Given Hamas’s sizeable payroll in Palestine, Mr S hopes ‘supporting workers’ won’t be interpreted quite that generously. While helping children may be a worthy cause, subsidising the local terrorist HR department would be rather less so.
Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, Mike Wood, said: ‘From the man who brought you hits including crippling strikes and no-strings-attached taxpayer-funded union payouts, the incoming director of the Bank of England has a new hit out next week. Nowak That’s What I Call Music. The last thing our country needs is a militant trade union leader who has attacked the City helping to run the Bank of England. If it wasn’t obvious who is driving this Labour government’s agenda, this should give you a good idea.’
So far, Nowak has raised £273 in a fundraiser tied to the track. The first 25 lucky donors will receive a free limited-edition CD – apparently those still exist. Mercifully, finding something to play it on should give recipients some time to reconsider. Those hoping for a spot at Nowak’s London launch gig will be disappointed – it’s sold out. But there’s still time to bag a ticket for the Liverpool debut.
As inflation rises and Britain’s economy flatlines, Mr S wonders what qualifies a trade union general secretary for a seat at the Bank of England. Presumably the same boundless self-belief that persuaded him the nation needed to hear him sing about Palestine. Still, Paul’s diary is filling up nicely. A pity about everyone else’s order books.
