Labour has won the Selby and Ainsty by-election – overturning a majority of more than 20,000, the biggest it has ever overcome at a by-election. But in a surprise result, the Tories held on in Boris Johnson’s former Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency by 495 votes following a recount.

Elsewhere, Rishi Sunak’s party lost in the Somerton and Frome by-election. The Lib Dems reversed a Tory majority of 19,000 in a decisive victory which saw Ed Davey’s party secure a majority of more than 11,000 votes. Davey said the result shows the party was ‘firmly back’.

While the results show the scale of the task ahead for Sunak, the Tory win in Uxbridge will be seen as disappointing by Labour. The party’s leader Keir Starmer focused on victory in Selby, which he described as ‘historic’. Starmer said that win shows that ‘the people are looking at Labour and seeing a changed party, focused entirely on the priorities of working people’. But Labour will be unhappy at its failure to poach Uxbridge. Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds suggested opposition to London mayor Sadiq Khan’s Ulez policy contributed to defeat.

Speaking to BBC Politics Live, Reynolds said: ‘You’ve got a situation where things are very tough for people right now – the mortgages they’re paying, the energy bills that they have got. And of course then when they are faced with a potential additional charge, that is going to be a difficult thing.’

Here are the results in full from overnight:

Labour has won the Selby and Ainsty seat in North Yorkshire, by a majority of 4,161. The final count was:

  • 16,456 for Labour‘s Keir Mather
  • 12,295 for Claire Holmes of the Conservative party
  • 1,188 for Matt Walker, of the Lib Dems

The Lib Dems won in Somerton and Frome. The final count was:

  • 21,187 for Sarah Dyke of the Lib Dems
  • 10,179 for Faye Purbrick of the Conservative party
  • 1,009 for Labour‘s Neil Guild

The Conservatives held their seat in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. The final count was:

  • 13,965 for Steve Tuckwell, of the Conservative party
  • 13,470 for Labour‘s Danny Beales
