It’s Tuesday. That means that once again, it’s time to listen to Meghan of Montecito talk about herself on her new podcast Archetypes. This week, to pad out the hour, Meghan brings in Mariah Carey to talk about the ‘complexities’ surrounding the word diva.

Oh great, more words that Meghan doesn’t like! Steerpike was starting to think she had run out of so-called ‘labels’.  During the episode, pop star Mariah opened up about the difficulties she faced growing up, saying (in a slightly garbled confessional tone): ‘I didn’t fit in, it would be more of the black area of town, or then you could be where my mom chose to live, where the more white neighbourhoods, and I didn’t fit in anywhere at all.’

Presumably worried that Mariah may out-trauma her, Me-again brought the conversation back to her struggles, telling Mariah:

If there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband… Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman, because up until then I had been treated like a mixed woman and things really shifted.

There’ll always be something to moan about if you try hard enough, Meghan. At one stage during the interview, Carey carried out what Mr S can only describe as the Lord’s work. She said: ‘You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan. Don’t even act like.’ Meghan responded (frostily) with: ‘What kind of diva moments do I give you?’ Carey, laughing replied: ‘Don’t act like you… it’s also the visual.’ To which Meghan responded: ‘Oh it’s the look.’ (Yes, it’s difficult to follow. But trust Mr S when he says it’s better to read it here than listen to the podcast itself.)

By her own admission, Meghan says she started to ‘sweat’ when Carey called her a diva. What’s wrong Meghan? Can’t handle the truth? Maybe she needs some tips from Prince Andrew on how to avoid sticky armpits.

Meghan then ended the podcast by questioning what Carey could have possibly read that would dare make her label Meghan a diva: ‘Though my fangirling was tempered today, I kind of think she could tell, but that aside, it was all going swimmingly. I mean really well until that moment happened, which, I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks when she called me a diva.’ If Meghan really wants to know why Mariah thinks she’s a diva, Steerpike has spent his morning compiling a list
