Flat White

Oh Ricky… Now look what you’ve done

One of the greatest speeches of the 21st century was given, surprisingly, at the 2020 Golden Globe awards.

It was as if the captain of the Titanic had come out on deck and, instead of directing the luvvies to their sequin-studded liferafts, decided to tell the shivering crowd that the boat wasn’t actually sinking but rather catastrophic Climate Change was making the sea level rise and that the shipping company would be instituting a tax to save them at some point over the next ten years. In other words, Gervais forced them to confront the ridiculousness reality of their virtue signalling.

Gervais’ speech at the Golden Globes is remembered fondly as a ruthless assault on Woke. His verbal claws cut so deep that the audience felt their virtue seeping out onto the floor. The room wasn’t laughing, but the world was because Gervais found the bone of truth under all that botox and silicon. It was the hypocrisy of the elite writ large.

‘Apple roared into the TV game with a morning show a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing – made by a company that runs sweatshops in China. Well, you say you’re ‘Woke’ but the companies you work for are unbelievable. Apple. Amazon. Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent. If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You are in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.’

I’ve seen rotisseries with less heat.

Last night, he found another bulging jugular and latched on. Netflix, realising that ‘Woke’ isn’t the path to riches, released Ricky Gervais’ comedy special SuperNature. It was immediately branded ‘graphic and hurtful’ – which serves as a working definition for good comedy.

‘Oh, women! Not all women, I mean the old-fashioned ones. The old-fashioned women, the ones with wombs. Those f**king dinosaurs. I love new women. They’re great, aren’t they? The new ones we’ve been seeing lately. The ones with beards and c**ks. They’re as good as gold, I love them. And now the old-fashioned ones say, “Oh, they want to use our toilets.” “Why shouldn’t they use your toilets?” “For ladies!” “They are ladies – look at their pronouns! What about this person isn’t a lady?” “Well, his penis.” “Her penis, you f**king bigot!’”’

…and the audience laughed.

When society is forced to accept the absurd, comedians come along and resurrect the truth. The audience laughed at this allegedly offensive material because Gervais had a valid point. Increasingly, real women are being referred to as ‘chest feeders’, ‘bleeders’, ‘breeders’ and ‘birthers’. In order to elevate men to a position of pronoun equity, women have been demeaned – and society isn’t happy about it. The Woke are having a sook on social media today because laughter indicates that the otherwise quiet and compliant society has only been pretending to accept this ‘New Normal’ out of politeness.

Progressives and radical activists go on and on about demanding truth, but when ‘truth’ is found in the glint of a comedian’s eyes, they don’t like it.

‘You can’t predict what will be offensive in the future,’ added Gervais, later in the show.

‘You don’t know who the dominant mob will be. Like, the worst thing you can say today [to] get you cancelled on Twitter – death threats? – the worst thing you can say today is, “Women don’t have penises,” right? Now, no one saw that coming. You won’t find a ten-year-old tweet of someone saying, “Women don’t have penises.” You know why? We didn’t think we f**king had to!’

The point being, fringe activism has attempted to rebuild society in its image and the general public simply don’t agree. Politicians, chasing their vote, have used the threat of the law to silence dissent and create the appearance of acceptance, but underneath the surface the vast majority still believe that men and women are biological realities to be respected.

Of course, activists were quick to accuse Ricky Gervais of ‘literally killing people’. Dr Amy Roberts said on Twitter: ‘Ricky Gervais is a disgrace, he is going to cause hate crime and ultimately the death of Trans folk. Anyone who needs to vilify minorities to get a laugh is the most evil hateful soul and seriously needs mental help.’

Isn’t it ‘hurtful’ to accuse someone of having a mental illness because they disagree with you? Twitter lists that as an ‘instant ban’ in its community safety standards but there is no evidence they intend on banning Roberts. Also damaging and offensive is the intention to take away the rights, safety, and careers of biological women and then demand that no one complain.

Unreasonable demands are often met with laughter, it is how civilisation weeds out bad ideas and obvious falsities. If America is still looking for a replacement to head their ‘Ministry of Truth’, perhaps they should consider Ricky Gervais. At least it would make this hellish sequel to 1984 entertaining.
