It’s a nonsensical cliché, propagated for decades by people who don’t understand history, that the next election is always the most important of our lifetimes. But the forthcoming American presidential election, for once, lives up to the hype. It really is a consequential moment in the history of liberal democracy, and its outcome will determine whether a 21st Century form of authoritarianism will become entrenched in American politics, and, like much American culture, be exported to liberal democracies worldwide.
The new authoritarianism, if left unchecked, will cause a fracturing of the status quo ante of liberal democracy (because of institutional capture), and create the conditions for a possible societal collapse in the liberal-democratic West. We’re already witnessing the first stirrings of a revolt of the masses, in both good and bad ways, across the democratic world because of the imposition of a suite of ideologies antithetical to freedom.
The alternative to this scenario is whether genuine believers in liberal democracy and free speech can restrain the monolith that has, over the last decade, corrupted American political institutions, created a Big Brother-like control of information and news by technology companies, and rejected the Judeo-Christian ethics that are the foundation of the secular morality that animates the West. In this scenario, instead of the separation of powers, there will be a politicised bureaucracy whose overbearing virtue-signalling ethics will reach into every aspect of our lives; instead of freedom of speech a technocratic-led consensus will control access to controversial issues, including scientific discoveries that are a threat to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which is the dominant left-liberal political philosophy of our time; and, instead of a gentle, commonsensical suite of time-honoured wisdom animating our world (with apostates allowed to create their own heaven or hell), we’ll be coerced to live in a social-justice, critical-theory, environmental, open-borders, transgender-dystopia policed by a be-kind brigade of Woke puritans.
In other words, the propagandised, media-led consensus that has been drip-fed and, at times, poured over our heads, which says Trump is a threat to democracy is the exact opposite of the truth. It’s not the crude-talking, shoot-from-the-hip, sometimes foot-in-the-mouth Trump who will end democracy, it’s the Democratic Party and its institutionally captured bureaucracy, which comprise the establishment in America (what some call the ‘Blob’) who will curtail freedom. And just like every authoritarian movement in history, they will pursue their agenda with a smiling face – in this instance a cackle – and for our own good. The proof of their ambition is hidden in plain sight. Look at the history of the last nine years, and imagine what the technocratic puritans of the Democratic establishment will do if they manage to win another four to eight years in the White House.
The crimes committed by the Democratic establishment sub rosa over the last decade, because of widespread ignorance among the electorate, (who have not understood the implications of a radically new technological dispensation), are staggering.
Because of the internet, we are in the middle of huge revolutionary change. Marx was right, even if he exaggerated its effects: the material conditions of life – technology, in this case – create, in many ways, our beliefs. And there is much room for mischief in the lacunae between one material world ending and another material world coming into being.
It is into this space that the Democratic Party have pushed (poker-faced and with plausible deniability) the ethics of the executive, judiciary, and legislature to the limits of liberal democratic governance, and all with one goal in mind – to stop Trump’s legislative agenda – in short, to curtail any reversal of the left-liberal consensus. To achieve this aim, they have done more damage to liberal democracy than any sin of Trump’s. Moreover, they are hungry for power, and are indifferent to the downstream effects of their activism.
Whether it was supporting the riots and violence of the Black Lives Matter movement; whether it was manipulating the law in an attempt to jail Trump; whether it was pushing the anti-scientific lunacy of transgender activism into the mainstream; whether it was using the security services, including the FBI, to trap their opponents in fictitious crimes; or, incredibly, propagandising a riot into an ‘insurrection’, the shame never ends.
Even if the Democratic establishment is against the notion of authoritarian government, their behaviour has created the conditions where authoritarian corruption has taken root. And their rhetoric – and often silence in the face of prima facie injustice – means they are guilty of crimes against freedom, justice, and liberal democracy. Because a crime is not on the statute books doesn’t make it less of a crime. Moving a nation into a grey zone of legality is not only immoral, it’s dangerous and ultimately counterproductive.
If Kamala Harris, though, is not stopped at the ballot box, everyone will pay the price of the Democratic Party’s Woke madness. Joe Biden’s presidency was the most Woke administration in American history. He wasn’t in charge, and Kamala Harris was his Vice President. Institutional capture, in other words, is happening everywhere, including the White House. Prepare, then, for a world, if Harris becomes president, where she’ll introduce every Woke idea — transgender admirals, anyone? — into the mainstream of American life, and punish anyone who doesn’t enthusiastically affirm ideas with which they disagree. It’ll be like clapping for Stalin, where nobody wants to be seen to end the applause, but on a continental scale. The result is that freedom will become nothing but a buzzword.
America has been the shining light of liberty for over two centuries. We may be in the twilight of freedom as an historical moment. As Marx said, history repeats, first as tragedy, then as farce. The ahistorical-Woke-activist class, which turns trifles into catastrophes, and which cannot understand that people on the margin of society can only flourish if the majority are free to voice their opinions, are ignorant of everything but the eternal present.
Trump has promised to do what Barack Obama did, and which the Blob ironically told him couldn’t be done – fire thousands of bureaucrats. If Trump loses in November, the woke Blob will be in charge for the foreseeable future.
