Cool it, lefties, we all need air con

The war on modernity has found a new target

This summer, Europe has experienced a wave of record-breaking temperatures. Southern France hit 44 degrees Celsius. Naturally, the French took time out from striking and no doubt surrendering to someone to cool off with a refreshing dip in the fetid waters of the Seine. Meanwhile, Germany faced unprecedented heat and ordered its population to throw ice cubes at the sun. Not to be outdone, the UK’s brief 35 degrees spell triggered total societal collapse. As weathermen declared an apocalypse, asylum-seekers complained it was too cold to go outside, birds burst into flames, and millions of severely sunburned Britons swarmed the beaches to complain about the heat.

Enter academia and their media handmaidens to save the day. Leading the charge is Professor Mat Santamouris from the University of New South Wales, who solemnly warns that while air conditioning saves lives, ‘We cannot air-condition our way out of climate change.’ He points to the looming spectre of grid collapse and the tragedy of people turning to mechanical cooling as their default response to being hot. Echoing this sentiment, Time magazine immediately declared that, ‘air conditioning is not the solution’, citing a study warning that if low-income regions achieve the same access to air conditioning as wealthy ones, the resulting emissions will cause a ‘feedback loop’ that puts global climate targets out of reach.

In other words, the modern climate crusade is the ultimate luxury belief. Adopting a righteous stance costs a tenured academic absolutely nothing. But for the lumpen proletariat, it is a demand to voluntarily heat-stroke themselves for the greater good of Klaus Schwab. Call it ideological imperialism – the arrogance of our eco-overlords dictating energy policy from temperature-controlled boardrooms.

The big-brained proposal coming out of UNSW’s heavily air-conditioned ivory towers? Something called ‘passive cooling’. Instead of affordable electricity and a remote control, the professor suggests the sweaty masses combat 40-degree summers with window shading, ‘smarter ventilation’, and painting our roofs white to reflect sunlight.

Europe needs air conditioning, but the commentariat has made its position clear: you will sweat and you’ll be happy. Just 4 per cent of UK homes have air conditioning, compared to 75 per cent in Australia. Yet, as the Guardian screamed that air con is destroying our planet, legacy media would rather admonish the heathen hordes. They tell us we’re ‘guilty as hell’ and that failure to atone for the sins of carbon emissions will bring about judgment day – the imminent heat death of the planet. Activists care less about practical solutions to pollution and are more concerned with demonising the rest of us as a plague upon the earth. And yet when we find a solution? It’s far right! I mean, how else could Mussolini get those trains to run on time without a split-system unit?

Populist parties pulled off a brilliant political heist by staging an intervention for the sunburned citizen. In Germany, the hard-right Alternative for Germany went on the offensive, demanding massive AC roll-outs while rejecting eco-mandated heat pumps. Across the border, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally looked at the sweltering public schools and nursing homes and launched a campaign for ‘aircon for the masses’. They called the anti-AC stance eco-puritanism. The backlash was so swift that even the French Greens suddenly declared cooling a ‘medical necessity’. Meanwhile, the German Greens tried to salvage their dignity by insisting you can only enjoy cool air if your house resembles a space station covered in state-subsidised solar panels.

For years, Europe’s green parties treated the compressor unit with the disdain reserved for plastic straws or petrol engines. These ideologues believed that if you ignored thermodynamics, the air would eventually comply with EU rules. In the hallowed name of net zero, modern European apartments – built to airtight eco-standards to trap winter heat – have become uninhabitable glass greenhouses each summer.

Back in Australia, our local eco-puritans are frantically trying to import this same architectural masochism. They look at a modern suburban home and decry it as a carbon monster – a poorly designed hotbox whose reliance on coal-fired grids to run air conditioning is a catastrophic failure – while gazing at a mud-brick yurt with a wet sheet over the door and see utopia.

Let’s dismantle this green dream once and for all. The idea that humanity can ‘ventilate’ its way through a western Sydney or European summer is a war against human progress. Air conditioning is arguably the greatest public health triumph of the 20th century. It conquered the tropics, built Queensland, made Singapore an economic powerhouse, and saved countless lives. These anti-aircon puritans act as if mechanical cooling is an unnatural addiction we need to kick, when in fact it’s simply an artificial habitat modification – no different than building a fire in a cave during the Ice Age. As far as I’m aware, nobody told a caveman he was killing the planet by banging two flints together.

And this is what enrages the green mob: to keep this glorious burst of cold air running when the outside world is sweltering, we need reliable energy. We need fossil fuels. Not solar panels and batteries. The exact moment every Aussie household punches their air conditioning button as they get home from work, the grid faces a vertical cliff-face of power demand.

To suggest we can meet this peak load by relying on weather-dependent toys is a joke. When the mercury starts to bubble, you don’t pray for a gentle breeze to turn a turbine; you pray for the high inertia of a coal-fired power station pumping out gigawatts of uninterrupted base-load electricity. Fossil fuels are the beating heart of a climate-controlled world.

If Greens want to live in a world of smarter ventilation, painting their driveways in the naive belief it’ll stop the planet doing what it’s done for 4.5 billion years, let them go for it. The rest of us will choose civilisation. We will choose to live in homes where the indoor temperature is dictated by a thermostat, not by the whims of the troposphere, sociopathic globalists, and hysterical climate alarmists.
