I’m sorry that you were assaulted. But in my case I saw my attacker select me because of my crutches. I saw him lean in to his mate and explain what he was going to do and I saw him laugh in advance. It didn’t work out for him because I saw it coming, but I also saw the process that selected me for assault for the crime of being disabled in public.

Society, via our elected representatives, has decided that there are certain crimes that are made more heinous because they specifically target minority group members simply for being members of that minority, because of a widespread societal hatred for that minority group, and because these crimes en masse serve to try and force that minority group out of public life. There are dimensions to these crimes that do not exist with other crimes. The police, CPS, and Judiciary all agree not just that this is necessary, but that we are not yet remotely good enough at dealing with it.
