Oh dear. Liz Truss probably didn’t think her week could get any worse, five days after resigning the premiership and fleeing the country. But tonight, the Mail on Sunday reports that her phone was hacked this summer when she was Foreign Secretary and running for the Tory leadership in the summer. Details of the security breach however were suppressed by the then-Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and the Cabinet Secretary, Simon Case, according to the newspaper.
Spies suspected of working for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, are reported to have gained access to sensitive information, including ‘highly sensitive discussions with senior international foreign ministers about the war in Ukraine, including detailed discussions about arms shipments.’ Gosh. The Mail on Sunday also claim that private conversations between Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng criticising Johnson fell into the hackers’ hands, leaving them at risk of blackmail.
Allies of Truss told the paper that she was worried that if news of the hack leaked it could derail her chance of winning the leadership race and that she ‘had trouble sleeping’ until Case allegedly imposed a news blackout. Opposition parties are already demanding an investigation into the alleged attack, which will raise questions about the UK’s cybersecurity, as well as the judgment of Johnson and Case.
As Truss told aides at the Tory conference just, er, four weeks ago: ‘I don’t know what happens — drama just seems to follow me everywhere I go.’
