Tony Abbott: ‘Israel is doing the world’s work’

Former Liberal Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, released a comment on the Israel-Iran conflict this morning.

‘Israel is doing the world’s work in trying to destroy forever the Iranian nuclear weapons program and it’s good that America has supported its ally.’

His short tweet went a lot further than the statement released by the Australian government which appeared in the absence of Anthony Albanese having the courage to make the statement in person.

The insipid comments read:

We have been clear that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program has been a threat to international peace and security.

We note the US President’s statement that now is the time for peace.

The security situation in the region is highly volatile.

We continue to call for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy.

Australians in Israel, and Iran, and the region should continue to monitor public safety information provided by local authorities, including to shelter in place when required.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be communicating directly with registered Australians and preparations for assisted departures.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong really took that message to heart. She has used her social media account on X to chirp like a panicky travel agent instead of making serious comments on the situation appropriate to her role.

As has been noticed in recent weeks, the Albanese Labor team are tripping all over the international stage like drunk university students on some kind of socialist bender. They come off as immature, unserious, and are being treated that way by countries that once held Australia and its leaders in high esteem. Even left-wing leaders are shunning Australian politicians as if they are carriers of the plague.

Aspiring to ‘professional fence-sitting’ is a strategy that works nowhere and for no one.

Eventually, regardless of whether Trump’s strikes against Iran bring peace or war between Israel and Iran, the streets of Australia will not quiet down.

If Hamas were defeated tomorrow, what would the pro-Palestine protesters do? Celebrate? Somehow, that seems unlikely. While they may use ‘Palestine’ as their media-friendly flag, almost none of them oppose Hamas. Mostly, they parrot the ‘anti-Colonial’ propaganda used by terror leaders as an excuse to butcher Jews and non-believers.

When Iran is free of the brutal Islamic theocracy, and women can once again walk the streets without wearing the black veil that consigns them as little more than property, the pro-Iranian protesters in the West will riot at the injustice. Freeing women was never on their agenda. Political parties, such as Labor, do not ask or even know what the agenda is…

Moral clarity, especially when it comes to the preservation of Australian culture and the supremacy of Australian values, means making choices that upset migrant communities who are determined to carry on the religious wars of their homeland on Australian soil.

If Albanese had not overseen the importation of over a million people from countries at war with each other, this problem would not exist. But they did, and it does.

A true Prime Minister preferences the survival of the nation above personal political goals. So far, Anthony Albanese has shown little interest in what the people of Australia want.

The official press release from the Labor Party is itself an example of misinformation, or at the very least, an obvious manipulation of the truth.

While Donald Trump may have called for peace, as the statement claims, the President immediately followed with: ‘If they do not [make peace], future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.’ Donald Trump also said: ‘There will either be peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days.’

Does Australia’s statement share any relation to reality?

Albanese should know that it is not ‘smart’ to ‘talk around’ established facts or famous political statements. In the Age of Social Media, the average Joe probably heard the President’s speech before the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the general absence of the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and the Defence Minister during world-changing events makes it feel as though there is no one at the wheel and that Australia is adrift, bobbing around on the currents flowing between the major powers.

Yes, it is a weekend, but these politicians are paid handsomely for a reason.

Returning to Tony Abbott.

In an interview with the Institute of Foreign Affairs last week, he said:

‘Iran, for the last 40 years, has been threatening to wipe Israel off the map. For at least the last 20 years, it has been developing nuclear weapons or trying to develop nuclear weapons.

‘It seems over the last few months it’s rapidly accelerated its progress towards a nuclear bomb.

‘Now ask yourself this: What would any self-respecting country do confronted by a neighbour dead-set on its obliteration about to get a nuclear bomb?

‘Inevitably there would be a pre-emptive strike at some stage.

‘So I just think those who are moralising against Israel right now need to ask themselves what would they do if they or their countries were in the same incredibly difficult position…

‘I think what Israel has done is well justified. If Israel does succeed in significantly setting back Iran’s nuclear ambitions, preferably for all time, it will be doing the whole world a favour.

‘I just hope that this operation does succeed and I wish we would hear less from politicians, including our own, about de-escalation.

‘Essentially, talk of de-escalation is, in effect, an instruction to Israel to stop.

‘No one wants this to become a wider war, but this operation should continue until Israel has done everything it reasonably can to completely destroy the Iranian nuclear program.’

There is a surprising chunk of both the conservative and left-leaning voting base who think practising pacificism and neutrality will stop the ambitions of a nation like Iran. They believe everyone will start singing Kumbaya. Indeed, anyone who has spent time on social media will notice aspects of the right uniting with the left, joined by their hatred of Jews to support the regimes of Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. It is the enemy of my enemy is my friend philosophy (where friend actually means useful sacrifice) taken to suicidal extremes.

It is unclear what prompted Trump to shorten the offered (not agreed) negotiating period but it probably had something to do with Iran firing rockets at the capital.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, certainly isn’t listening to Australia’s plea to de-escalate…

‘Silence in the face of such blatant aggression would plunge the world into an unprecedented level of danger and chaos.’

Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, is hiding in a bunker picking successors, seemingly aware that he might be facing the same threat as so many terror leaders that his regime helped finance.

The entire leadership has been pushed underground and ordered to ditch electronic devices such as phones and pagers.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has said that the Ayatollah ‘can no longer be allowed to exist’ after he was accused of personally giving the order to destroy an Israeli hospital.

Where was Australia’s comment about that action, which is a clear violation of international rules of engagement?

Albanese has effectively taken the same position and rhetoric as Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping, which suggests a lot of unflattering things about Labor’s view of the world.

The world is a mirror of the most powerful country, and currently we reflect the liberal democratic order. If China were to rule, it is likely, argues Tony Abbott, that other nations would start to look more like China.

Ultimately, he finished by pointing out America’s critical role in Australian defence.

‘Frankly, the periods of critical danger are now … not in seven years’ time. If any conflict were to break out, we have to come to that fight with what we’ve got and at the moment we haven’t got much.’

Adding:

‘Under the current government, we have not proceeded with the order of another squadron of F-35s. We have prematurely retired one Anzac frigate. We have diminished our order for new fighting vehicles. We are about to retire our last remaining mine sweepers. We have not gone ahead with the order for light frigates. We have not got the domestic missile production facility underway. Really it has been a litany of neglect and failure.’

It makes you wonder if anyone in a position of power takes the defence of Australia seriously.
