The CEO of GoFundMe, Tim Cadogan, set his Twitter account to ‘private’ after presiding over one of the biggest outrages in Big Tech history.
It was very nearly a broad-daylight heist, after over $10 million Canadian dollars in donations was frozen with GoFundMe threatening to re-distribute that money to credible and established (read ‘woke’) charities. This behaviour is considered unusual for the funding platform, which routinely hosts small or unknown events.
Quite rightly, GoFundMe was immediately accused of theft, with Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis calling its actions fraudulent. Attorneys-general in Louisiana and West Virginia immediately began looking into potential violations of state law, asking their constituents to contact them with details of their donations.
Tens of thousands of furious supporters demanded their money back, swamping GoFundMe’s social media accounts with complaints. As outrage spread, people worked out that they could go directly to their banks and start issuing charge-backs, potentially sending millions of dollars in bank fees in GoFundMe’s direction.
Unsurprisingly, amid significant threats to sue and investigate the company for financial wrongdoing, GoFundMe reversed its decision to reallocate the funds and instead began an automatic refund for all donors.
‘To simplify the process for our users, we will be refunding all donations to the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser. This refund will happen automatically – you do not need to submit a request. Donors can expect to see funds within 7-10 business days. The update we issued earlier enabled all donors to get a refund and outlined a plan to distribute remaining funds to verified charities selected by the Freedom Convoy organisers. However, due to donor feedback, we are simplifying the process and automatically refunding donations.’
The statement is far from an accurate reflection of what happened and the forty-thousand replies beneath the post wasted no time making that evident. ‘GoFundMarxism’ and other less-printable versions of their company name trended all afternoon.
It has since become clear that GoFundMe did not act entirely on its own when it came to cancelling the Freedom Convoy. Ottawa Police issued a statement via Twitter stating, ‘We want to thank GoFundMe for listening to our concerns as a City and a police service. The decision to withhold funding for these unlawful demonstrations is an important step and we call on all crowdfunding sites to follow.’
This adds to Canadian Prime Minister (in hiding) Justin Trudeau’s unbelievably childish behaviour. After falsely branding truck drivers as white supremacists, bigots, islamaphobes, anti-LGBT, and other slurs – he has come out and supported a state of emergency which was declared in Ottawa. The only emergency anyone can see is the Freedom movement gaining worldwide traction, accelerated by scenes of jubilation in Canada.
The annoyed Mayor of Ottawa declared that protesters were ‘turning Ottawa into a party’. ‘Clearly, we are outnumbered and we are losing this battle. This has to be reversed – we have to get our city back,’ said Jim Watson, on CFRA.
This is the largest truck convoy in history with over 50,000 drivers and it has only occupied the capital to combat Trudeau’s unpopular vaccine mandates on the trucking industry that robbed people of their right to work. Trudeau’s position has become harder to defend in the face of failing science that has shown – across the whole world – that Covid vaccines do not stop transmission.
According to Ottawa’s police chief, there is ‘no precedent for the Freedom Convoy’ in terms of ‘organisation, funding, and commitment’. This would ordinarily signal to the political class that their health mandates have ‘no precedent’ and that people’s commitment to resisting them is therefore also ‘unprecedented’. Instead, Trudeau outright refuses to address the concerns of his people, preferring to refer to them as ‘terrorists’ while they stand out in freezing conditions waving Canadian flags.
The longer the protest is left unacknowledged by Trudeau, the longer their list of demands grows. Where it began with resisting vaccine passports for the US-Canada border, it has now branched out to reject all Covid health orders and infringements on liberty.
But what of the role of tech giants? GoFundMe has branded itself as a facilitator of charity. The online platform is meant to act as a passive middleman between causes that need money and the people who want to give it to them. Or as their bio puts it, ‘Helping people help each other through fast, safe, social fundraising.’
In recent times, tech merchants have become increasingly political. GoFundMe, under the leadership of Cadogan, has been caught manhandling charity events on its platform. Speccie writers like Bettina Arndt have found their fundraisers frozen because they do not align with woke expectations even though the burning, looting, riot-fest of Black Lives Matter had no trouble securing donations. Cadogan even released an official statement in support after GoFundMe created the Justice + Equality Fund and threw in $500,000 to kick things off. It has only managed to raise $1,141,970 since then.
GoFundMe later clarified its decision to cancel the Freedom Convoy fundraiser was because it ‘promoted violence and harassment – which prompted Tesla CEO Elon Musk to accuse GoFundMe of raging hypocrisy because it happily supported the Capital Hill Occupied Protest in Seattle. Also known as CHAZ, that movement saw the illegal seizure of city blocks which quickly transformed the place into a lawless catastrophe of violence, theft, and vandalism where leaders of the moment encouraged racism by asking ‘whites’ to pay money to ‘blacks’ at group vigils.
Cadogan says that he wants to ‘change the way the world gives’. Well, after the events of last week, it appears that ‘change’ means taking money from charities championed by ordinary people and gifting it to GoFundMe’s pet causes.
There is no question that Big Tech, politicians, and the police are now interacting with each other to silence dissent against Covid health orders.
This collusion between ‘independent’ entities should worry everyone.
