Is it just me, or have others noticed that heterosexual couples have lost access to the words ‘husband’ and ‘wife’? Those words now appear be restricted for the exclusive use of the gay community. Married gay couples appear to insist on them—he will talk about his ‘husband’ and she will talk about her ‘wife.’ However, whenever there is a news story about a heterosexual couple (a car crash, home invasion or whatever) they are now invariably referred to as ‘partners’. I thought same-sex marriage was supposed to deliver ‘marriage equality’—well, any sense of language equality seems to have gone. When the classic marriage words ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ are denied to a couple who’ve been married for twenty years and raised two (biological) children what we are seeing is not ‘marriage equality’ but ‘marriage hijacked’.
