Flat White

Blood and circuses

Ideologically, we are in a mess

The scary corners of the internet are going mainstream, not because they have moderated their rhetoric, but rather our government and media have lost their minds.

Everything is relative, including sanity.

Having destroyed nations with a sustained sequence of catastrophically dumb and self-serving policy, Western politicians have festered into paranoid, controlling, greedy creatures who see it as their right to dismantle cultural norms and gaslight suffering taxpayers.

The perfect example is Anthony Albanese posting a handwritten note telling kids that the Big Daddy government has saved them from the dangers of free speech. The same government, we remind you, that sees transitioning children into a gender delusion as healthcare and leaving them in a mental state of collapse over a non-existent climate apocalypse as responsible.

Never mind, parents spent yesterday ratio-ing Albanese on X while helping their kids access social media. Congratulations, Albanese, social media is now awash with children hiding beneath their parent’s avatar … or a screenshot of Grand Theft Auto character. If the goal of Labor was to look out of touch with the youth, they have succeeded. That’s what happens when you steal a Liberal thought-bubble blown by a media empire. The fallout from Anika Wells’ international travel expenses looks like it might be karma for this story.

Parents and children have spent more time collaborating to thwart the government than they have doing homework together in the past year.

As pointed out by our followers on Facebook, if the government wants kids to relive the glory days of the 70s (without the drugs and alcohol, we are presuming), the government might want to consider making the streets safer. The main reason kids ended up on social media is because helicopter parents, scared shitless by news reports about stranger danger, did not want their little ones being attacked by machete-wielding youths or robbed by perpetually criminal foreign gangs.

And what about the education department forcing kids into a lower quality of online learning despite opposition from parents?

Government policy has made Australia less safe. We no longer leave our doors unlocked. We no longer let our kids roam around outside. And now the government seems more concerned about safety online, rather than in the real-world … because social media also happens to be the most powerful political tool available. Wait.

Very few people are fooled by the think of the children wool being pulled over Digital ID and censorship laws.

Hanging from the government’s arm are media giants starved of advertising money.

The fortunes they used to pay mediocre stars has walked off to social media and it is not coming back without a state-sanctioned butchering of their market competition. People under 35 do not read newspapers, watch TV, or listen to radio. Instead of improving their content, they are having a toddler-style stamping fit wanting to know why the champagne has been cut off. Is anyone surprised, then, at the ideological collusion between media and the government? The biggest mastheads are drooling at the prospect of hurting social media and in response, they are providing cover, rather than criticism, of the bipartisan censorship agenda.

Social media is a free market competitor, to both the media and politicians.

Then we have the audience.

Years of Covid lies has created a group of people who believe nothing they are told, only what they discover. It’s a trauma response. Conspiracies bring them comfort, which is a shame, because when outright fabrication muddies the water, the real crimes committed are hidden rather than revealed. The forest for the trees, etc, and by gosh there is a lot of weedy undergrowth coming up to obscure the landscape.

Not only that, a solid generation of hyper psychotic feminism and DEI has built a fanbase of jaded young men. Their rejection from society has made them the perfect crowd for influencers who sell hyper masculinity and commentators who embrace the incel persona as being a deliberate rejection of society. It’s punk rock, with hashtags instead of eyeliner.

The problem is, these new voices are not quota hires, they are genuinely talented when it comes to the presentation of their bad ideas. Young people find their arguments compelling because they are made without an intellectual challenge. Only finger waving.

We are talking about self-declared Hitler fanboy Nick Fuentes telling a rambling Piers Morgan to ‘calm down’ while masterfully backing the experienced host into the ‘have you seen a tampon in real life?’ corner. Really? The growing incel army are still chanting ‘Boomer!’ in Fuentes’ follow-up videos and as a result, disaffected and misled young men are circling their king.

If that paragraph was mostly gibberish, it’s because a generational gulf has emerged. People don’t only think differently, they speak differently too. This is a bigger problem than many comfy, caged journalists realise.

Plenty will choose to view Fuentes and his followers as a tiny, isolated minority insignificant to the conversation. They were. That’s less true now.

If you think I am kidding, see the below snapshot of their ongoing conversation on X this morning.

Carl Benjamin (Sargon of Akkad) went to the trouble of putting up a video explaining the appeal of Fuentes because even his audience of (previously young) conservatives don’t understand the gathering storm.

To be fair, Carl has ten years on me, and I’m too old to understand Fuentes as well.

Those boys don’t have role models. And it’s no good saying, ‘How can you like a guy who thinks Hitler is cool?’ when all of their male and female peers think Stalin, Mao, and Che Guevara are cool. The left-wing education system hero-worshipped last century’s murderous socialists. Fuentes just picked the socialist they left out. It’s not a moral leap. More like a small nudge.

The Fuentes fans are blurring with the Tate fans, the Kanye West bros, the Candace Owens ‘just asking questions’ crew, and the Tucker Carlson collective. These groups originally overlapped with MAGA, but it is an association which has soured in recent months to the point many, if not all, of the above are tilting their followers away from Trump. To where, it’s not clear. In a voluntary voting system, they don’t need to offer an alternative other than the subscribe button.

One example of the white-anting from this group is the rapid dismantling of Charlie Kirk’s legacy.

Murdered in front of the cameras with his alleged killer awaiting trial, the online rhetoric would have you believe Israel popped up through a hatch in the solid concrete slab beneath the stage, killed Charlie, and then picked up an assassin’s paycheque from France. Honestly, some of the things that have been alleged, hinted at, and monetised for clicks are truly obscene and yet they are repeated by legions of eager followers as if political murder is now a reality TV show with actors, fake children, and a secret twist.

Is it Netflix & Chill culture seeping into real life, or are people so bored with their descent into poverty and cultural oblivion that they seek a distraction?

On the flipside, we have the previously fringe commentators looking rather … adult … no doubt much to their disappointment.

Alex Jones, once the unmentionable host of InfoWars, was out giving a mostly reasonable recap of Australia’s utterly mad Under 16 social media ban and the UK’s Online Safety Act.

He wasn’t wrong or fringe to compare the establishment of these programs to the beginning of a China-style approach to online speech. ‘The Holy Grail of tyranny!’ Yes. Alex Jones then mocked the European Union for claiming it was some sort of free speech Utopia while arresting people for mean jokes.

This is the ‘gay frogs’ guy. And he sounds like the only sane person in the room.

If this keeps up, Alex Jones will lose his fringe credentials and end up as social media’s version of prime time.

Alex Jones has become the Babylon Bee – unable to upscale the outrageous narrative put out by real governments. All he can do is report the facts and brandish the headline at the camera.

Tommy Robinson is another one sitting uncomfortably in the mainstream.

He is not a radical. Not anymore. Certainly not according to the millions of UK citizens who have recently discovered the Grooming Gang scandal. Their nation is under constant siege from fighting-age third-world men waved through by a so-called ally (France) and when UK women are raped or killed, the perpetrators are either released or gently slapped on the wrist. The extent of two-tier policing is a topic for another article, but it made Tommy Robinson a truth-teller in a sea of lying ministers. While Reform’s Nigel Farage has made it clear he would like to keep the two movements separate, the voters are overlapping. Tommy Robinson isn’t running for Parliament, but his flag-waving rallies muster Reform voters to the polls. There is no ground left for the Tories to make here. The fringe has rendered the old conservative party irrelevant. If this assumption is solidified at election, political historians will write about it for a thousand years.

Returning to US politics, Tim Pool, a reasonably stable figure from the online commentary world and host of Timcast, cracked this week. It was a meltdown, but a justifiable one. Like Brigitte Macron, Candace Owens appears to have finally broken something inside Tim in the way a single mosquito can make a reasonable person smack themselves repeatedly in the face and then spend the night scratching manically. Tucker Carlson did something similar to historians earlier in the year when they couldn’t cope with one of his guests.

And don’t get me started on Milo.

The problem is, every time a sensible person in the conservative movement reaches their breaking point, like a gladiator pit in ancient Rome, the crowd cheers. They enjoy the spectacle of fallen giants and of speared bystanders who fall into the arena.

It’s blood and circuses before the breadlines start.

We are distracting ourselves with spectacle while the leaders of the world rumble towards war and bury their secrets completely unnoticed.

It is as if the West is trying to wake up from Woke but found itself trapped in that perilous fever-dream state where the ghoul is sitting on our chest and we can’t move.
