The compound noun ‘rage apply’ is (I am told) the name being given to a new trend in workplaces around Australia. It was reported in the Daily Telegraph with the comment that ‘rage apply’ could result in either massive pay increases or else employees burning bridges with their employer. So, what is ‘rage apply’? The paper says that ‘rage apply occurs when you become so frustrated, burnt out and fed up with your job and your boss that you furiously apply for as many new roles as you can, even if you don’t (really) want them.’ From those words it is unclear whether your rage is supposed to provoke applications for more different roles in the same company, or for jobs in other companies. However, the Urban Dictionary clears this up. They define ‘rage apply’ as meaning: ‘Applying for new jobs at different companies when you are fed up with your current job.’ But surely this is just normal behaviour, something people have been doing forever? If you decide you dislike your job you apply for another job elsewhere. Why call it ‘rage apply’? Is it because the younger snowflake generation spend all their time focussing on their own emotions? Hence the focus on ‘rage’? It seems pointless to me. Rather like that other new workplace expression ‘quiet quitting.’ This is found in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged with the definition: ‘the practice of doing the minimum amount of work required for one’s job.’ But that has also always existed. We used to call it ‘laziness’.
