As Goodwin comments, “Social democrats made a gamble that they could target the highly educated middle class and that workers had nowhere else to go. They lost that gamble.”
Gramsci was right: you control the means of cultural production – such as universities – and you will eventually control the state.
Combine that with the post-war expansion of higher education, while the ever shrinking working class kept manufacturing things, the left decided their time was better spent manufacturing its new voting class.
This is a gamble they most definitely won.
