In all the excitement of the Brexit referendum, the presidential election and our own nail-biter poll we appear to have forgotten the other major campaign underway at the moment: the campaign to succeed Ban Ki-moon as Secretary General of the United Nations.
Unforgivable, really, given that our very own Kevin Rudd is a contender for the post. Or is he?
In the midst of everything The New Statesperson has carried a piece on the UN stoush you may have missed detailing the whole sordid affair, yet Kevvie’s candidacy doesn’t even warrant a mention. It’s as if he’s been scratched before even entering the barriers.
From one point of view this could be seen as a slight to national pride.
From others – indeed, from bitter experience (let alone the government’s own embarrassment over the issue) – it might be better regarded as cause for relief.
