As the Liberal Party’s most promising young talent in Hastie and Price lie in wait on the backbench, Leader Sussan Ley has undertaken a necessary reshuffle of the survivors.
The new Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, replacing Hastie, is Tasmanian Senator Jonathon Duniam.
This appointment is, according to Ley, ‘one of the most significant decisions’ for the leader to make.
Duniam has released the following statement:
I am honoured to be appointed as the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and thank the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Sussan Ley, for the opportunity to serve in this crucial role.
While this is a portfolio that covers complex policy areas, it requires common sense solutions in the national interest. Australians deserve to feel safe in their communities and confident that their government will uphold our national security, enforce the rule of law and do what’s right for our country and its citizens.
Under the Albanese Labor government, there have been appalling decisions which undermine national security and erode trust in our institutions.
The return of ISIS brides, facilitated by the Minister for Home Affairs without transparency or accountability, is just one of a string of failures. Communities deserve answers, not secrecy from this government which is failing its promise to be upfront with Australians.
I thank my good friend, Andrew Hastie, for the work that he has done in this portfolio since the election and I look forward to working in the national interest to get it right for our country and its people.
This appointment triggered a game of musical chairs among remaining members.
Julian Leeser has hopped out of the Shadow Attorney-General position and slipped in to fill Senator Duniam’s place in Education.
Then, to fill the Shadow Attorney-General spot, Ley brought in Andrew Wallace, who was the Cabinet Secretary.
There are other smaller changes, but when it comes to opinion polls, Sussan Ley could select a random stray cat for her frontbench and it wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference.
The public have fallen out of love with the moderates. Like cheap perfume, Shadow Cabinet gives off a whiff of Woke every time it moves.
‘This is a team that meets this moment,’ her press release said.
What does that mean?
No one really quite knows, except that she is doing her best to rebrand moderate to modern.
Here is the full statement from Sussan Ley:
Today we have named a new Shadow Ministry that draws on the deep well of the Australian experience. It includes those who have served in uniform and put their lives on the line to keep Australians safe. There are sons and daughters of migrants and descendants of the oldest continuous culture on Earth.
There are those who have balanced the books of small businesses, and those who have made tough calls in corporate boardrooms. Our team is one of strivers and optimists, of innovators and entrepreneurs, of leaders and listeners. Our team includes voices from the city to the Bush. It includes farmers and public servants. People who went to university and those who got a trade.
This new Coalition Shadow Ministry balances experience with new talent. It reflects the full range of philosophical traditions, values and perspectives of our joint party room. This is important because both Coalition parties are at our strongest when we harness our full intellectual and philosophical firepower.
Led by me as the first female Leader of the Opposition in Australian history, we are proud to have promoted the voices of women across our Shadow Ministry. We have a commitment to harnessing the voices of women to take Australia forward. But we are the first to say we have more work to do.
I want to thank all members of the Liberal Party party room. I have spoken with every single one of them over the past two days. Each has a significant role to play, whether in the Shadow Ministry or not.
This is a team that meets this moment.
We have made a clear commitment to Australians to listen to the message they sent us at the Federal Election. We must listen, change and develop a fresh approach.
We must respect, reflect and represent modern Australia. Our team will do that work and win back the trust of Australians.
We are ready to get to work.
Until the party works out the lay of its moral land, the positions in Shadow Cabinet remain irrelevant.
So far, the Liberals have managed to determine that ISIS Brides (female members of the Islamic terrorist state) shouldn’t be shuffled into Australia under a blanket of secrecy. They’re also pretty sure that sexual predators deserve mandatory harsh sentences.
As for clarity on biological gender, free speech, social media privacy, and Net Zero … the Liberals have nothing but question marks.
