Purpose:
Be a part of a small and friendly team and reporting directly to the Head of Production and Development (Web and Digital Technologies), you’ll play a key role in developing The Spectator and Apollo’s vital and growing digital presence.
Your challenge will be to help deliver technical developments for our websites, apps and other digital offerings, as well as assisting with the smooth daily operations of the department.
Whether you’re assisting with and collaborating on upgrades, user acceptance testing and user experience, actively monitoring website and app performance, or solving technical issues, you’ll make sure that every user of our digital offerings has an outstanding experience.
You’ll be a central point of contact, both internally and externally, for advice and support. You’ll help guide teams across The Spectator and Apollo on the creation of digital activities and messages, as well as liaise with a range of internal colleagues and third-party developers to provide solutions that fit in with our digital objectives.
And, in all that you do, you’ll aim to engage the widest possible audience with The Spectator and Apollo through an exceptional online experience.
Core responsibilities:
- Assist with planning digital and website projects, by researching and proposing new technologies to deliver the ultimate user experience
- Suggest and specify new solutions and applications that will further aid the business.
- Constantly analyse the user experience of our website and apps and suggest ways to improve our digital offering
- Help to ensure all developments are fully documented, and meet high level design requirements, such as data, customer experience, architecture, security, and quality.
- Ensure all developments go through an appropriate testing process, and have solid go live plans that are well documented.
- Accurately report all development activity, progress and issues, identifying risks, mitigation strategies ans remedial action as required.
- Monitor and report on key website performance metrics, assess results and identify opportunities to increase effectiveness.
- Help to coordinate website and app changes and updates on a day-to-day basis.
- Create and maintain strong working relationships with other stakeholders and the wider organisation.
- Provide technical guidance and support to the digital task force as well as the wider organisation and help to educate on best practice.
About you:
- Educated to degree level and with previous experience in a publishing and commercial digital environment.
- You’ll have experience of working with complex CMSs (ideally WordPress) and will be able to apply your knowledge of HTML and CSS, user acceptance testing and experience in your day-to-day work.
- You’ll already have a thorough understanding of monitoring and analytics tools, and with an acute eye for detail you’ll be confident producing timely and accurate analytics reports on a regular basis.
- Well organised and able to use your initiative, we can rely on you to work flexibly and effectively even during the busiest times.
- You’re also an outstanding communicator, and will enjoy engaging with people at all levels across our varied and talented team.

Experience:
- A self-starter who is able to think on their feet and also finishes tasks thoroughly
- Strong technical background, with extensive experience and knowledge of the technology behind consumer websites
- A solid understanding of CMS platforms (ideally WordPress)
- Past experience of data analysis, personalisation of user experience, monitoring user behavior and/or improving user journeys.
- Past experience of working in a time sensitive environment with many different stakeholders
- Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- A desire to push the boundaries of web design and a passion for outstanding user experience
- Knowledge of the latest industry technological developments
- Able to work independently, but also as a team player
- Microsoft Office suite
